how can you tell if your race exercise saddle is broken?
i own an exercise saddle for the yard i work at, im not sure if it is full tree or half tree. it's started making clicking noises. i can't feel anything wrong with it, but the sound it makes is not good.

It's pretty easy to tell if it's a soft back or full tree - if the back cantle can be easily lifted or folded upwards, it's a soft back. Full-tree saddles are firm all the way through the panels to the end of the saddle. To see if the tree is broken, you need to balance it on your thigh and see if it can be twisted at all. Different parts of the tree could be broken or cracked, and you can't necessarily feel it when riding. The tree in a soft back is pretty short - about maybe 6 inches back from the pommel. The bars extend down about 8" or so, and are what rest on the horse's trapezius muscles.
You can always take the saddle to a good tack shop and have the saddler check it out. A broken tree can really mess up a horse's back. Hope this helps.
