Leather Saddle
How do I reshape my new leather saddle?
I bought a new leather saddle on ebay and just received it today. The leather on the skirt is curled up (as if laid on floor) and bent a little in some places (from shipping). Any ideas on how to reshape it?
That can sure be disappointing, I know. Usually, with a new or used saddle, the first thing that I will do with it is soak the fenders, stirrup leathers with plain water (spray bottle) set them on a saddle tree and twist the stirrups symmetrical and run a broom stick through them underneath the saddle just long enough to soften the leather to facilitate adjusting the length of the leathers to fit me. I can do this on the saddle tree, then just let it completely dry that way. I keep an old electric candle/potpourri warmer with a pan on it that I heat up my neats foot oil (100%) no compound, otherwise it contains petroleum products. I used to use a little hot plate, but realized that I was getting the oil too warm and curling up the bristles on my paint brushes. When the oil is warm, I just brush the oil on the saddle liberally. I like darker saddles, so I use the oil everywhere but the seat, so it all matches in color....I still leave the broom stick in and by this time, the curls are soft enough to stuff a saddle pad under to hold them flat until they dry. I don't wipe off the excess oil for a couple of hours, then use a dry towel. When completely set, you pretty have everything set to fit you and your horse and protected from moisture./sweat.
