Why doesn't my front mountain bike disk brake want to respond when I need?
I just replaced my mountain bike front disk brake caliper, wires, disk, and cables. They were lubed also but they do not respond well. Specifically, I press the brake levers, the wire pulls the caliper, but the brake pads only slide slowly on the disk and I can't stop safely. I rely only in the rear brake which works perfectly.
There are a few things that can be going on here:
1) After all these parts were replaced, was everything adjusted properly? Is the cable tension set so there is adequate force at the caliper? (If the amount of lever pull is similar to that of the rear brake, that's a good indication that the problem isn't with the adjustment.)
2) New parts, specifically the pads and rotor, need to "burn in" when new. This can take a few dozen long, hard stops. Tech tip: mud is your best friend here...dirty pads and rotors burn in faster.
3) You mention they were "lubed." What specifically was lubed? If at any point during the installation/adjustment you got ANY lube on your pads, they're contaminated and must be replaced. You must also clean your rotor before installing the new pads (isopropyl alcohol works well).
