Free Hubs
What are automatic free running hubs?
I have a four wheel drive nissan terrano, when i put it in four wheel drive mode on a dry road and turn a bend it feels like the hubs are locked because i can hear the tyres rubbing and the stearing wants to go straight ahead. I think i have something called free running hubs.
These are the front hubs on a 4X4 vehicle that are controlled by a selector in the passenger compartment. By selecting the 4x4 mode, the hubs are engaged and driven by the axle. If freewheel mode, they tires are free to rotate independantly of the axle. On hard surfaces, running in locked mode can result in the front end "hopping" or excessive wheel spin on turns due to the changes in the driveline. On rough or loose surfaces, you may notice the tires spinning a bit when taking tight turns due to the inside wheels having a shorter distance to travel compared to the outside ones. Usually the differentials (4x4's have two, one front and the rear) will compensate for this change, but just look at anyone who has turned sharply, and stepped on the gas, the resulting wheel spin will show that there is only so much that the gears and driveline can cover before there will be some loss of traction and wheel spin.

Solid threaded axles are graced with bronze axle nuts to set off the beauty of this hub. The rear hub is spaced to 120mm, track specific spacing, and the fixed gear interface is our spline design which eliminates the issue of stripped cogs. The mating cogs are made out of 8620 case hardened steel with an electroless nickel plate finish. |
