Clincher Road
What's the difference between tubular vs clincher road tires?
I'm thinking of getting new wheels for my bike now that I've started getting serious, but what's the difference between tubular and clincher road tires?
If it matters, I have a 2005 Lemonde Versaille
A bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Woozy, unfortunately, only has a bit.
Tubulars do, in fact, have a tube. There is nothing at all tubeless about them. The tube just happens to be encased entirely inside the tire. The tire is called a tubular because the inside edges are sewn together which forms a tube.
Tubulars are somewhat more expensive than clinchers and tubes, but not exceedingly so.
Although the tube is sewn inside the tire, it is possible to patch a flat. Patching a flat requires cutting the threads, pulling the tube out, applying a patch and resewing the tire.
It is a bit time consuming but no real big deal.
Changing a tubular takes a bit of practice as the tire must be cemented to the rim. However, a tubular can be changed much more quickly than a clincher.
Hope this helps.

Thanks to the newly developed tread, with deeper cuts in the middle and shallower on the shoulders we achieved a better water dispersion (Aquaflow computer simulation) and a faster and safer tire when cornering. 60 TPI casing, Aramid Endura 3D Compound new compound (for a lower rolling resistance) and foldable bead all sum up to enhance the Zaffiro Pro as the ideal training tire. |
