Ceramic Bearings
What are the best ceramic bearings for my road bike?
Hello I have a fuji sl1 with kysrium elite wheels by mavic, and a ultegra sl drivetrain, i would like to know what brand of ceramic bearings should i go for. Thanks
My advice is to forget ceramic bearings. They won't make you go faster unless you are an elite racer looking to shave a few seconds off of a long time trial.
I am pretty sure that all the bearings on your bike except the bottom bracket and headset are "cup and cone" with loose bearings. Take the time to completely overhaul the surfaces- remove the bearings, clean all surfaces of the factory grease, and reinstall with white lithium grease. Don't "pack" the bearings- Coat the races with a small amount of grease- just barely enough to coat it- and "roll" each bearing between your finger until thinly coated. Do this every 1500 miles and you'll be far ahead of the "ceramic bearing peloton".
If you really want to go overboard get some high grade stainless steel balls from your local bearing supplier.

A message from George Powell: In the early 1980s, skateboarding was at a low ebb and it was difficult to find top quality bearings. American bearing companies like Fafnir had vacated the bearing market because the Japanese produced vast quantities of lower cost bearings and U.S. companies could not compete at the price Japanese bearings were selling for. The Japanese bearings were of good quality but were not very fast. German bearings were better, but many skaters wanted an even faster bearing to help them go higher on vert ramps or to roll farther with each push. Seeing this need, I set out to find the best bearing I could that would still be affordable to skaters. I looked in America and in Europe. My search ended at a small, custom bearing manufacturer in Switzerland. Their bearings were faster than any we had ever tested before and, at the time, only a little more expensive than German bearings. I worked with the Swiss manufacturer to optimize a bearing for skating. I changed from a standard stamped metal ball retainer to a high speed precision molded plastic one that could be removed by skaters to allow better cleaning of the bearing. We left one shield off so skaters could get to the inside of the bearing without any tools to clean and re-lubricate it. Next, we adjusted the tolerances and clearances to allow the bearing to take the combination side and vertical loads imposed by skating better than normal bearings do (which are mostly designed for electric motors). Finally, we replaced the usual lubricant with a special one we developed ourselves called Bones Speed Cream. Re-engineering this fine bearing for skating produced the fastest, most sought after, most competition successful bearing in the history of our sport. |

Bones Swiss Ceramic bearings are simply the best skate bearings out there today. Pro Skaters use them, and there's a reason - they're the best. There are the strongest, fastest, smoothest and most durable bearings in existance. Specifications: Solid High Purity Silicon Nitride Ceramic Balls Fully Serviceable Removable High Speed Nylon Ball Cage Removable Non-Contact, Frictionless Rubber Shield Lubricated with Low Viscosity Bones Speed Cream Fastest Speed and Acceleration Lowest Friction, Longest Roll Lightest Weight Bones Skate Rated Design & Quality Bones Swiss Ceramics use ceramic balls, instead of polished steel like everyone else. The Ceramic balls are harder, lighter than steel, stronger, and roll with less friction. This means you'll get going fast quicker, you'll have a higher top speed, and you won't need to replace your bearings as often due to flat spotting of soft metal balls and chewing up the raceways inside of the bearing. Bones Ceramics are also easier to clean - they come lubricated with Bones Speed Cream and are easy to pop open and clean. The bearings come with instructions on how to care for them, and the Bones web site has help as well. Suggested Retail: $120 |

Rubber coated shield is removable for easy cleaning. Ceramic bearing balls weigh up to 40% less than steel bearing balls, depending on size. This reduces centrifugal loading and skidding, so hybrid ceramic bearings can operate 20% to 40% faster than conventional bearings. This means that the outer race groove exerts less force inward against the ball as the bearing spins. This reduction in force reduces the friction and rolling resistance. The lighter ball allows the bearing to spin faster, and uses less energy to maintain its speed. |
